Draper City Council Passes Resolution to Restrict Future Mining

Point of the Mountain, Draper, Utah

DRAPER, Utah. – The Draper City Council initiated the process last night to restrict future expansion of mining operations in the city. The Council voted unanimously to approve a resolution directing city staff to initiate the process of amending the City Code.  The proposed text change would not affect the established legal rights of any current mineral extraction operations.

“Our city is growing and changing. It is incumbent upon us to make prudent decisions that protect the health and well-being of our residents, support economic opportunities, and improve air quality,” said Draper City Mayor Troy Walker. “We have heard loud and clear from our residents and our business community that expanding mining operations within the city limits is inconsistent with these values.”

The approved resolution will now make its way through the city’s open and transparent review process. The Planning Commission will listen to public input during a public hearing on the proposal and make a recommendation to the City Council.  The City Council would then take comments at a future public hearing and vote to either approve, not approve or take no action on the proposal.

“While we strive to be good neighbors to all businesses currently operating in our city, we recognize that we must also be responsible stewards of our natural environment and preserve important open space for current and future generations,” said Walker.  “In addition, we have a generational opportunity with the soon-to-be relocated state prison to support growth and development that is compatible with our vision for the future.”
